Thanks to all who joined the Crystal Refresher Class on July 22.    The on-line session was a four hour review with two full hours of attendee questions.  Listening to others' experiences and questions is an important benefit of shared classes. 

In the class follow-up, almost every attendee told us they were able to apply an idea or two immediately in their own jobs.  The reviews were positive: “enjoyed it”, “worth the time”, “of great value”, “beneficial”.  We appreciate the time you took giving constructive feedback for improvements on future sessions.  New class topics were also recommended during the survey and are under consideration. INVENTORY CLASSIFICATION – EFFECTIVE AND PROFITABLE

From the current issue of the APICS eMagazine is this innovative concept:

An inventory-classification system based on both sales and inventory turns is recommended. It provides decision makers with a clear plan by making it easier to focus on the items that matter. First, let’s classify the four types of products as

• elephants—items that are big and slow-moving
• jaguars—items that are big and fast-moving
• tortoises—items that are small and slow-moving
• rabbits—items that are small and fast moving.

Once inventory items have been divided among these categories, it’s time to ask the following questions:

• What are the products that make up the elephants? What is the difference between these products and the jaguars? How can elephants be migrated into jaguars?
• Are there differences among distribution centers or plants? What cross-learning can be facilitated in order to spread best practices?
• Are the tortoises consuming more than their fair share of managers’ time and attention? Is it worth it?
• Can rabbits be migrated into jaguars via special promotions or pricing?
